The
history of create a future?
create a future was established in May 2001 as a natural development
of the organisation known as the Birmingham SATRO (Science and Technology Regional
Organisation).
The SATRO was established by Birmingham LEA in 1986 and having gone through
a number of changes, was re-located to the University of Birmingham (Electronic, Electrical & Computer Engineering- Gisbert Kapp Building) in April 1993.
Since 1996 … when we really started counting … we have worked with
over 500,000 young people. That is a staggering average of 50,000 young people
per year … at a cost of roughly £9 each … which is phenomenal
value for money!!
Some of our successes
- operated the Nuffield Science Bursary Award Scheme since 1996 for the West
Midlands, placing 453 post 16 students in 98 hosts for the summer holidays
- developed and delivered a range of support services for teachers of STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) … teachers keep coming
back year after year, after year … in fact one of our longest teacher
relationships has survived 4 different schools over 8 years!
- working with young people in the West Midlands developed a wider key skill
programme – the only one of its’ kind in the UK. Over 12,500 young
people have taken part in the programme since 2001, with over 60% of them
gaining a qualification in Problem Solving (at levels 1,2 or 3)
- operated the SETPOINT for the Black Country, Birmingham and Solihull areas
on behalf of STEMNET and the DTI since 2000
- have met all our contractual targets for the last 10 years
- gained Investors in People status in June 2005
- remained financially viable year on year (no mean feat for a non-profit
making company!)
